Leslie and Smith Presented at the 2010 FACTE Conference

Christina Smith and Tina Leslie
Tina Leslie and Christina Smith presented with Dr. Victor Hernandez at the 44th Annual Conference of the Florida Association for Career and Technical Education (FACTE), on August 5, 2010, in Clearwater, FL. The presentation was about the prospects of teaching career and technical education online. First, Tina Leslie addressed the issue from the perspective and experience of the Florida Virtual School (FLVS). Founded in 1997 as the as the country’s first, state-wide Internet-based public high school, FLVS offers an e-Learning model for K-12 education with potential implications for use in career and technical education. In turn, Christina Smith addressed district-led initiatives for online course offerings and discussed the implications for teacher and district involvement.

The presentation generated further discussion about the opportunities and limitations of e-Learning models using the FLVS and district efforts as a frame of reference. The interest was great and participants recommended that FACTE consider establishing a conference strand for online learning at future meetings.

Tina Leslie and Christina Smith are doctoral students in CWE@USF. Leslie works with FLVS and Smith teaches at Chiefland High School in Chiefland, FL.
